We started from a clean sheet. The clients told us what they wanted. We designed ourselves around their demands. Everything we do now is geared towards offering them the best possible service at the lowest possible price. We also cook a mean risotto.
Over the past six years, printing.com has established a methodology that is challenging
the accepted norms of the high street print sector. It has achieved this paradigm shift
by basing its business model on an ultra-efficient, centralised production hub, with
100+ outlets, fused together with proprietary software.
This approach to centralising production involves the use of industrial sized state of
the art presses, enabling a superior standard of printing compared with the sector
at large. This centralised approach achieves the inherent efficiencies of any mass
production process – enabling a very favourable price point to be offered to the end
user.
Essentially, it is this competitive advantage that has fuelled printing.com's
expansion from one outlet in 1998, to over 100 today. The success of the printing.com
formula was reflected by the Company's flotation in September 2000, with its shares
traded initially on London's 'OFEX' market, and more recently, its promotion to the
London Stock Exchange.
printing.com full colour printing is available from our dedicated stores and franchise partners. It's an ever-expanding network and we would love to welcome you on board. The first step is to request more information.
Printing.com franchises
We offer two types of franchise. The 'Bolt-on franchise' is for established print or marketing companies and allows them to leverage our multi-million pound production facility and deliver the highest quality printed products to their customers. The 'territory franchise' is a management franchise for people who want to move into the printing industry and build both a store and a network of franchises.
Got an existing business in the graphics arena?
Investigate our Bolt-on Franchise. It lets you get on with running your existing print, design or marketing business, whilst adding a great new facet. Use our branding, methodology, technology and production capabilities to sell full colour printing at the same low prices that our stores do. It's a powerful proposition.
Want to be an entrepreneur?
Start your own printing.com Territory Franchise. It's one of the most demanding, potentially rewarding franchises available on the market. Start a printing.com store and build a territory of bolt-on franchises. Suitable for sales or marketing professionals, a Territory Franchise will test your management skills (see separate page for more info).
The printing.com bolt-on franchise
The majority of printing.com outlets are franchised – with a variety of options available. The company's territory franchise requires liquid funding in the order of £40,000 with a total investment in excess of £100,000.
However, the company also operates a 'bolt-on franchise' format whereby an independent business – typically graphic and
web designers, marketing consultants, copy-shops or printers – can add the printing.com formula to their existing firm.
This additional printing.com facet can be added at any stage – from a start-up through to an established business. The rationale for this partnership is that the bolt-on franchisee can significantly extend their product offering without a corresponding increase in overheads. This is possible, as the type of business in question would typically already have the necessary IT and internet connections. Moreover, the bolt-on franchise stretches the fixed overhead element of the partner business – such as the rent, rates and other occupational costs.
Crucially, the bolt-on franchise remains autonomous with independent identity in addition to integrating printing.com. For instance, design agency Colourbox would brand their new service 'printing.com @ Colourbox', although their corporate identity would remain as 'Colourbox'.
Initial licence fees covering the training and 'hand-holding' of a new franchise, are typically in the range of £6,000-£18,000 and £3,000-£5,000 in subsequent years. Typically, a successful bolt-on franchise could account for an additional £12,000 of sales per month, at a gross profit in the order of 50%.
Such is the success to date of the printing.com bolt-on franchise, that a special finance facility is available via The Royal Bank of Scotland ('RBS'). Under this scheme, printing.com can sanction term-loans of £5,000 up to £25,000. The scheme is available irrespective of which bank the bolt-on franchise partner currently uses and without the need for the franchisee to switch banks. As printing.com underwrites the finance, the scheme can be used where the conditions for conventional bank finance or Small Firms Loan Guarantee Scheme are not met.
How does printing.com sharpen the offering of a quick printer?
When targeting SME or corporate customers in an increasingly competitive marketplace, Quick Printers must consider the question of how they can differentiate themselves. As diagram B illustrates, the printing.com offering displaces many of the price points previously offered in the trade. Most Jobbing Printers who join the scheme initially continue to offer their own in-house lithography in parallel. Although in many instances, once they become experienced users of the printing.com system, they rely less and less upon these services.
What synergy does printing.com bring to a web designer?
For any Web Designer formulating a business plan, the expected marketing spend and the number of clients they hope to generate must clearly be identified – with subsequent calculated client acquisition cost. The printing.com offering creates added value per client by coupling superior print supply with existing digital graphic expertise. As Web Designers, the printing.com 'environment' will already be very familiar, as its proprietary software runs in a standard web browser.
How does such an integral approach benefit a graphic designer?
With printing.com, Graphic Designers are able to offer the same extended product range, and essentially the same price point as any 'dedicated' printing.com store. This eliminates the inherent suspicion that many clients have concerning the 'mark-up' on the printing they were otherwise supplied with. It also eliminates the inevitably time-consuming process – usually undertaken by senior personnel – of obtaining and collating print quotes. Our research also indicates that when targeting SMEs, it's typically easier to obtain a print order with printing.com's price points and subsequently leverage significant graphic design opportunities.
The rationale for using a bolt-on franchise for a business start-up.
For any entrepreneur keen to start a business venture, the difficulties in raising development capital can often render their plans defunct – especially when the individual does not meet the typically prudent bank finance criteria. printing.com's Enterprise Programme (in conjunction with The Royal Bank of Scotland) can offer term-loans of between £5-25k to entrepreneurs with the relevant skills in order to fund their business venture. Additionally, as a potential graphic or web designer, copy shop or printer, adopting a bolt-on franchise will provide you with expert marketing solutions and brand value, coupled with business expertise and support.
Bolt-on facts:
