On 21st May 2004, new regulations relating to asbestos management became law; they have been described as:
'the most significant and far reaching health & safety amendments since the introduction of asbestos legislation'.
The duty requires those who control the repair and maintenance of non-domestic buildings to assess whether asbestos is present. The duty holder must ensure that information regarding the location and condition of materials is given to anyone likely to disturb it and the information has to be kept up to date.
It is now a mandatory requirement to assess and manage the risks from asbestos in commercial, industrial and public premises. The 'Duty to Manage' means over 500,000 businesses, residing in 1.5 million properties, will require an asbestos survey, risk assessment and management plan.
